The United Nations General Assembly, after the recent Special Session of the Human Rights Council, should soon be discussing the Report of the Fact-Finding Mission on the Gaza Conflict led by Justice Richard Goldstone with three other experienced members. In addition to its field visits to the Gaza Strip and Amman, Jordan, public hearings were held in Geneva in June and July 2009. Staff members from the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights were in Gaza from May to July 2009 to conduct field investigations.
Citizens of the World have placed great importance on fact-finding as a way to strengthen world law. Non-governmental organizations have often taken a leadership role in such fact-finding. See the history of such NGO efforts by Hans Thoolen and B. Verstappen Human Rights Missions: A Study of the Fact-Finding Practice of Non-Governmental Organizations (1986). World Citizens have also stressed the importance of fact-finding by the United Nations and intergovernmental bodies. See the analysis by the former Acting High Commissioner for Human Rights, B.G. Ramcharan (Ed.) International Law and Fact-Finding in the Field of Human Rights (1983) and the useful overview by Richard B. Lillich (Ed.) Fact-Finding Before International Tribunals (1991).
Thus, the Report of the Fact-Finding Mission on the Gaza Conflict merits a discussion of high quality both for its importance to the conflicts in the Middle East and for its importance to strengthen further world law. As Justice Navanethem Pillay, the UN Commissioner for Human Rights has said “Accountability for breaches of international humanitarian law and for human rights violations, as well as respect for human rights, are not obstacles to peace, but rather the preconditions on which trust and, ultimately, a durable peace can be built.”
We are sure that you share the convictions of Citizens of the World that fair and comprehensive fact-finding is a key element in the development of the rule of law and that you will give the ‘Goldstone Report’ the full attention it merits.

In 'Ecco come morimmo', ho raccontato, fra le altre, una cosa terribile: come il Potere ha disabilitato milioni di noi cittadini impedendoci così di partecipare alla polis, cioè di cambiare il nostro tempo. Ho spiegato perché questa è la tragedia somma e cosa fare per contrastarla. Ci hanno tolto il tempo materiale per poter persino pensare, meno che meno agire.
La mail di questa donna toglie il fiato, per la verità di ciò che dice, per come è tragicamente vero per milioni di persone. Va imparata a memoria.

Mi chiamo Daniela, ho 50 anni e ti seguo da tempo sul tuo sito.
Velocemente ti ringrazio per il tuo lavoro.
Le tue riflessioni coincidono spesso con le mie e credo di "sentire" la tua rabbia quando spieghi che i cambiamenti devono avvenire in ciascuno di noi. E' a questo punto che nasce il mio dramma che forse è quello di migliaia di persone come me, spezzate e piegate dall'impossibilità di agire, dovendo fare i conti con le leggi di questo sistema che non ci lascia più scampo. La mia è una storia come tante, fatta di difficoltà quotidiane infinitamente più lievi di quelle di chi muore ogni giorno per povertà, guerra, fame,ingiustizia ecc.ecc. Ma i conti dobbiamo farli con la nostra vita e con la nostra quotidianità. Dalla quale ormai manca il tempo anche per pensare. Io mi sento sbattuta contro un muro e schiacciata da una mano invisibile che mi spinge incessantemente e non mi lascia IL TEMPO di muovermi. Il lavoro mi massacra per molte ore al giorno, e sempre più spesso ho la sensazione che i miei PADRONI non solo mi sfruttino per i loro guadagni, ma abbiano un nemmeno tanto celato piacere sadico nell'impormi TEMPI assurdi, orari improponibili ecc. La cosa più grave è la totale rassegnazione di colleghi quasi tutti giovani, come me ricattati e incapaci di reagire per timore di essere cacciati via. Così si spinge sempre più sull'acceleratore e si rompe il freno: sempre di più senza regole, senza limiti, solo richieste sempre di più. Tutto cio' moltiplicato per milioni di persone, non tutti hanno la percezione di questa realtà e allora meglio per loro, perchè se invece ce l'hai, non puoi fare nulla, devi andare avanti aggrappandoti a speranze come a corde di carta. Lo sai che si spezzeranno, ma tanto è: ci provi.
I paladini dell'antisistema sono corde di carta e non cambieranno niente. Perchè IL TEMPO per alzarsi non c'è più, perchè la mano invisibile ti spinge contro il muro e ti blocca. Perchè DEVI risolvere i tuoi bisogni primari e quelli dei tuoi figli e se non ti PIEGHI ti ritrovi per la strada e non sei capace di fare questa scelta. Il tumulto della mia anima è immenso, ma oggi sono sola come tanti, in un sistema che non ti vuole se non accetti le sue regole.

Da non dimenticare. Da fare.
Le persone devono urgentemente imparare a tornare protagoniste sia dell'informazione che dell'azione civica, e non, anzi, mai seguaci o fans dei 'personaggi forti' che sanno, che possono, che contano. I 'personaggi forti' devono invece divenire 'piccoli' al servizio dei forti, che siete voi persone. Ecco i passaggi per arrivare a ciò:
Ogni volta che voi pubblico ascoltate o leggete il lavoro di chi vi informa, dovete imporvi di pensare che si tratta solo di fonti, non di oracoli, ma fonti da ascoltare a debita distanza, fra le tante altre fonti che ascolterete. Dovete arrivare al punto dove non esista più la relazione col giornalista 'personaggio/divo/esperto', che va visto sempre come un vostro consulente fra i tanti. Per far comprendere a chi legge quale dovrebbe essere l’atteggiamento esteriore e interiore di una cittadinanza sana nei confronti di chi li informa, chiuque egli/ella sia, vi chiedo di immaginare come il Consiglio di Amministrazione di un gigante industriale – per es. la Microsoft Corporation – si relaziona con un loro consulente. Lo convoca, gli dice senza troppe storie “Prego si faccia avanti, ci dica”, lo ascolta e poi “Bene, grazie, si accomodi”. Punto. E il consulente saluta e si mette da parte piccolo e secondario, per lasciare ai manager l’importante compito esecutivo. Ora, un pubblico di cittadini sani deve sentirsi esattamente come il management, cioè al centro del potere e delle decisioni, e deve ridurre gli odierni 'giornalisti/divi/esperti' al ruolo del consulente.
Oggi purtroppo accade l’esatto contrario: il 'giornalista/divo/esperto' troneggia, sentenzia, lancia diktat, e il pubblico piccolo piccolo lo adora, lo ammira, e, peggio, si raggruppa in fans club e ‘parrocchie’ dal seguito quasi sempre acritico. Ed è tristemente emblematico che l’immaginario colloquio che ho sopra descritto sia nella realtà di oggi esattamente il modo in cui, al termine della serata-dibattito con l’esperto/divo, viene invece accolto il pubblico quando chiede timidamente la parola: i 'personaggi' gli dicono “Prego si faccia avanti, chieda”, e poi “Bene, grazie, si accomodi”, cioè torni piccolo piccolo, marginale. I 'personaggi' troneggiano, firmano autografi, sono al centro. Voi ai margini. Assurdo, deleterio.
In questo modo la gente è solo sospinta a rimanere secondaria, cioè si annulla e non crescerà mai. La gente deve ripensarsi Consiglio di Amministrazione, e mettersi sempre al centro. (da L'Informazione è Noi)
Nell'azione civica/politica, per contrastare (se ancora sarà possibile) il Potere, ecco i passaggi:
- Studiarlo a fondo, per capire chi veramente è (non è la Casta, non è la mafia, non è la Chiesa), che storia ha avuto, fin dove è arrivato, con quali armi si muove, cosa sta pianificando per il futuro.
- Formarci in un esercito di attivisti di ampiezza nazionale. Mettere quindi da parte le differenze che separano i nostri gruppi che formano i Movimenti, cioè rinunciare ai nostri individualismi per un fronte comune, unico, compatto, disciplinato, implacabile di attivisti al lavoro ovunque, sempre, con linee guida universali, sempre le stesse e con metodi in perenne evoluzione.
- Capire che cosa, in questo periodo della Storia, innesca il cambiamento, quale vettore, quale tipo di interazione umana. Individuare queste chiavi di svolta con precisione, così come si isola una molecola benefica.
- Studiare di conseguenza una comunicazione immensamente abile per attirare l’attenzione del mondo della GENTE COMUNE.
- Studiare i metodi per rendere la comunicazione gradevole ma penetrante.
- Diffonderci nei LUOGHI DELLA GENTE COMUNE, implacabili, pazienti, tutto l’anno, per tentare di creare un consenso opposto a quello oggi dominante usando quei metodi attentamente studiati. Essere presenti in modo massiccio nelle scuole e università.
- Sopra ogni altra azione, ci deve essere il tentativo da parte degli attivisti di trovare l'ANTIDOTO alla paralisi della partecipazione dei cittadini alla polis. Se non sapremo sbloccare la cittadinanza paralizzata, inattiva, apatica di fronte a qualsiasi scandalo e persino orrore, abbiamo perso, perché quella paralisi è stata, è, e sarà l'arma finale del Potere.
- Essere molto ben finanziati, cioè cercare e ingaggiare sponsor ‘illuminati’ capaci di vedere il vantaggio di lungo termine di un mondo più giusto. Senza finanziamenti è inutile persino pensare al cambiamento.
- Sapere che è una strada in salita, poiché si tratta di invitare milioni di persone a scelte impopolari, a rinunce, a mutazioni di stili di vita, ma a saper vedere però la CONVENIENZA FINALE di un mondo più in equilibrio. Cioè dirgli: oggi il Sistema ti illude di guadagnare subito dieci ma non ti rendi conto che ti fa perdere mille; noi ti diciamo che ti conviene perdere oggi dieci ma guadagnare mille nel tuo futuro. Questa è la logica di ogni speranza.
Non c’è altra strada. Non c'è. (da High Octane Capitalism Ahead).

It reflects on the generally low-level of prisoner support & solidarity within our movement, and why we should increase it. Read it here if you miss it at the bookfair.

Why Prisoner Support?
Prisoner support should be an essential facet of any anarchist’s political activities; yet our prisoner support groups attract so little actual support from our fellow anarchists. Why is this?
Of course, it is natural for us to support someone we are close to, friends and family or even a comrade from ones affinity group, when they are banged up. Yet why do so few anarchists support comrades from within the wider movement, let alone prisoners in general? Mutual aid and solidarity are surely a central tenet of the anarchist ‘belief system’, one brick that any anarchist society should be built upon, yet it is something that often doesn’t extend beyond one’s immediate environment (family/friends/affinity group).
Not Sexy Enough
We all know that prisoner support is not particularly glamorous or possibly rewarding in terms of apparent immediate effect: we don’t see our circle A spray-painted on the wall, cashpoints superglued-up, disruption caused by a picket or the reality of an article appearing in our favourite organ of propaganda (though most of those can also be used as a weapon in any prisoner support campaign). Instead, prisoner support is largely invisible, the writing of letters, the sending of money and the giving of other practical support. Yes, we might go along to a gig raising funds for prisoner support but are we doing that to donate funds or because we want to see the bands?
We might read a call-out for support for a particular prisoners’ campaign but are we really paying much attention? Or are we going along to prison pickets when they are called? This is in fact one really simple and effective way of showing solidarity and support for individual prisoners, as well as showing the managers of these factories of repression that we outside the prison walls know and care about what they are trying to do to our comrades, those we chose to support, on the inside. And prisoner support groups regularly get feedback on these events showing clearly that they work, that the prison authorities take notice and are much less likely to abuse the prisoners supported.
Certainly Not Trivial
Writing letters too may seem a trivial method of showing support for individual prisoners but it is a concrete and practical starting point, and one that also very readily lets those on the ‘inside’ know that those on the ‘outside’ are thinking about them and showing them solidarity.
But there are so few anarchist prisoners I hear you say. Yes, it is true that the level of struggle in this country is very low and that too is reflected in the level of struggle within the prisons too, but that is no reason for being complacent. Anarchists surely should be seeking out class struggle activities to support wherever they occur, both inside prisons and in the wider communities, in the UK and abroad.
Despite the poor showing in the international exchange rates of that last bastion of Empire ‘the pound in your pocket’, our filthy lucre still goes a long way in certain parts of the world, particularly in Eastern Europe and South America. So there’s one area where practical solidarity is still valuable.
Another is taking your solidarity to the streets. A classic example of this is the Greek prisoners’ hunger strike in November 2008, when most of the prisoners in Greece’s 21 prisons went on an 18-day hunger strike in support of a comprehensive 45-point program of prison reform. Mass demonstrations and numerous solidarity actions outside the prisons in support of the hunger strike helped secure major concessions from the Greek state, concessions it could be argued that would not have been so easily won without such open displays of solidarity.
The Social Prisoner ‘Problem’
Which brings us to the so-called ‘social prisoner’ issue, which has long been a problem within the anarchist movement, with the more liberal elements in the anarchist movement decrying any involvement with ‘common criminals’. Fortunately, most anarchists involved in prisoner support see it in a somewhat different light.
If you are a long-term prisoner in any prison system, you have two options: either you do the ‘bird’, knuckle down and toe the line, making as little trouble for yourself as possible; or you stand up as an individual and fight for your dignity and the dignity of other prisoners against a system that is designed to squeeze that dignity out of everyone. Prison after all is still, despite what all the PR about rehabilitation and behaviour modification therapy would have us believe, designed to punish the individual prisoner, to make them not want to return and therefore not commit that next ‘crime’ that might earn them more time.
Therefore, when we come across prisoners who have become radicalised by the prison experiences, who are engaged in the class struggle against the system of social control that is prison, we should be supporting them in their struggle. After all, even the most cynical anarcho must see that we as a movement need to get the idea of a non-hierarchical decentralised class-free society more widely accepted and those at the sharp end of the state’s system of social control and conditioning should be more receptive than most.
Also, from a purely selfish standpoint, when the few anarchist prisoners that do end up inside are looking around for comrades to engage with in resistance to the prison regime, history has taught us that it is these social prisoners that anarchists make common cause with in struggle. So logically we should be showing them solidarity now, not waiting till it becomes merely a reward for the mutual aid and solidarity that they have themselves shown our imprisoned anarchist comrades.
Revolutionary Solidarity
Just as prisoner support should be more than just first aid to fallen comrades, support for other class struggle prisoners should be a conscious act of revolutionary solidarity, of practical everyday anarchist politics. Prisoner support also cannot be reduced to just a form of charity, writing a few letters to a prisoner or bunging an ABC group some spare cash. Prisoner support should in fact be seen as part of a wider revolutionary solidarity, which anarchists of all flags should be actively engaged in. It should be an integral part of the anarchist struggle, both against the prison society and in support of the new society we wish to see built in the ruins of the old.
In the end the most important thing we all can do is to get out there and get active. It is only through struggle and building a revolutionary movement that we will help not just anarchist prisoners, but everyone in need of solidarity.
Practical Things You Can Do:
Write to prisoners – practical solidarity that entails a commitment to the prisoner we write to as well as a trip to the post office.
Financial support to prisoner support groups – we spend a lot of our time and effort fundraising, time and effort that could be better spent elsewhere.
Books to prisoners – instead of spending your ‘hard-earned’ on that next tome on anarchist history, give the money to Haven Distribution books to prisoners project.
Other letter/faxes/e-mail writing – prisoner support groups often fight campaigns at the behest of prisoners to get them better conditions/parole/even not being executed.
Organise – in the workplace and community. This is something we could all be doing. No excuses now!

The following article has been written by Brighton ABC, with input from other ABC activists and random anarchists. It is due to be included in the copy of Freedom newspaper available at this Saturday's London Anarchist Bookfair. It reflects on the generally low-level of prisoner support & solidarity within our movement, and why we should increase it. Read it here if you miss it at the bookfair.

Why Prisoner Support?
Prisoner support should be an essential facet of any anarchist’s political activities; yet our prisoner support groups attract so little actual support from our fellow anarchists. Why is this?
Of course, it is natural for us to support someone we are close to, friends and family or even a comrade from ones affinity group, when they are banged up. Yet why do so few anarchists support comrades from within the wider movement, let alone prisoners in general? Mutual aid and solidarity are surely a central tenet of the anarchist ‘belief system’, one brick that any anarchist society should be built upon, yet it is something that often doesn’t extend beyond one’s immediate environment (family/friends/affinity group).
Not Sexy Enough
We all know that prisoner support is not particularly glamorous or possibly rewarding in terms of apparent immediate effect: we don’t see our circle A spray-painted on the wall, cashpoints superglued-up, disruption caused by a picket or the reality of an article appearing in our favourite organ of propaganda (though most of those can also be used as a weapon in any prisoner support campaign). Instead, prisoner support is largely invisible, the writing of letters, the sending of money and the giving of other practical support. Yes, we might go along to a gig raising funds for prisoner support but are we doing that to donate funds or because we want to see the bands?
We might read a call-out for support for a particular prisoners’ campaign but are we really paying much attention? Or are we going along to prison pickets when they are called? This is in fact one really simple and effective way of showing solidarity and support for individual prisoners, as well as showing the managers of these factories of repression that we outside the prison walls know and care about what they are trying to do to our comrades, those we chose to support, on the inside. And prisoner support groups regularly get feedback on these events showing clearly that they work, that the prison authorities take notice and are much less likely to abuse the prisoners supported.
Certainly Not Trivial
Writing letters too may seem a trivial method of showing support for individual prisoners but it is a concrete and practical starting point, and one that also very readily lets those on the ‘inside’ know that those on the ‘outside’ are thinking about them and showing them solidarity.
But there are so few anarchist prisoners I hear you say. Yes, it is true that the level of struggle in this country is very low and that too is reflected in the level of struggle within the prisons too, but that is no reason for being complacent. Anarchists surely should be seeking out class struggle activities to support wherever they occur, both inside prisons and in the wider communities, in the UK and abroad.
Despite the poor showing in the international exchange rates of that last bastion of Empire ‘the pound in your pocket’, our filthy lucre still goes a long way in certain parts of the world, particularly in Eastern Europe and South America. So there’s one area where practical solidarity is still valuable.
Another is taking your solidarity to the streets. A classic example of this is the Greek prisoners’ hunger strike in November 2008, when most of the prisoners in Greece’s 21 prisons went on an 18-day hunger strike in support of a comprehensive 45-point program of prison reform. Mass demonstrations and numerous solidarity actions outside the prisons in support of the hunger strike helped secure major concessions from the Greek state, concessions it could be argued that would not have been so easily won without such open displays of solidarity.
The Social Prisoner ‘Problem’
Which brings us to the so-called ‘social prisoner’ issue, which has long been a problem within the anarchist movement, with the more liberal elements in the anarchist movement decrying any involvement with ‘common criminals’. Fortunately, most anarchists involved in prisoner support see it in a somewhat different light.
If you are a long-term prisoner in any prison system, you have two options: either you do the ‘bird’, knuckle down and toe the line, making as little trouble for yourself as possible; or you stand up as an individual and fight for your dignity and the dignity of other prisoners against a system that is designed to squeeze that dignity out of everyone. Prison after all is still, despite what all the PR about rehabilitation and behaviour modification therapy would have us believe, designed to punish the individual prisoner, to make them not want to return and therefore not commit that next ‘crime’ that might earn them more time.
Therefore, when we come across prisoners who have become radicalised by the prison experiences, who are engaged in the class struggle against the system of social control that is prison, we should be supporting them in their struggle. Salve a tutte e tutti,
in tempi di papi e papelli, Paolo Barnard ha 'sfornato' diversi lavori di estremo interesse che, per chi non li avesse ancora visionati, vorrei segnalarvi.
Il primo riguarda il Trattato di Lisbona, l'unica vera legge che governerà le nostre vite e della cui esistenza la stragrande maggioranza dei cittadini europei è inconsapevole.

In particolare si parla di un documento, "The Crisis of Democracy", al confronto del quale il Piano di Rinascita Democratica di Licio Gelli sembra una letterina di un bambino a Babbo Natale...

...a Chiara Equa Polis...
Innanzitutto confesso la mia ignoranza nel trattare temi così importanti come quelli dibattuti in questo forum- mi chiedo in particolare quali saranno i primi passi da fare per mettere in moto questi due grandiosi progetti: la riforma dell'ONU e la restituzione ai cittadini del potere di loro spettanza, strappato loro dalle varie lobby politiche ed economiche- temo che sarà un percorso irto di ostacoli e difficoltoso oltre misura.
E' comunque una strada da percorrere insieme, con umiltà e la consapevolezza della nostra pochezza di uomini, la stessa consapevolezza dei primi scalatori di fronte a candide vette, ancora inviolate.
