It's Saturday night and I didn't want the day to end before I sent out this note to you.
One year ago today (December 17th), Mohamed Bouazizi, a man who had a simple produce stand in Tunisia, set himself on fire to protest his government's repression. His singular sacrifice ignited a revolution that toppled Tunisia's dictator and launched revolts in regimes across the Middle East.
Three months ago today, Occupy Wall Street began with a takeover of New York's Zuccotti Park. This movement against the greed of corporate America and its banks -- and the money that now controls most of our democratic institutions -- has quickly spread to hundreds of towns and cities across America. The majority of Americans now agree that a nation where 400 billionaires have more wealth than 160 million Americans combined is not the country they want America to be. The 99% are rising up against the 1% -- and now there is no turning back.
Twenty-four years ago today, U.S. Army Spc. Bradley Manning was born. He has now spent 570 days in a military prison without a trial -- simply because he allegedly blew the whistle on the illegal and immoral war in Iraq. He exposed what the Pentagon and the Bush administration did in creating this evil and he did so by allegedly leaking documents and footage to Wikileaks. Many of these documents dealt not only with Iraq but with how we prop up dictators around the world and how our corporations exploit the poor on this planet. (There were even cables with crazy stuff on them, like one detailing Bush's State Department trying to stop a government minister in another country from holding a screening of 'Fahrenheit 9/11.')
The Wikileaks trove was a fascinating look into how the United States conducts its business -- and clearly those who don't want the world to know how we do things in places like, say, Tunisia, were not happy with Bradley Manning.
Mohamed Bouazizi was being treated poorly by government officials because all he wanted to do was set up a cart and sell fruit and vegetables on the street. But local police kept harassing him and trying to stop him. He, like most Tunisians, knew how corrupt their government was. But when Wikileaks published cables from the U.S. ambassador in Tunis confirming the corruption -- cables that were published just a week or so before Mohamed set himself on fire -- well, that was it for the Tunisian people, and all hell broke loose.
People across the world devoured the information Bradley Manning revealed, and it was used by movements in Egypt, Spain, and eventually Occupy Wall Street to bolster what we already thought was true. Except here were the goods -- the evidence that was needed to prove it all true. And then a democracy movement spread around the globe so fast and so deep -- and in just a year's time! When anyone asks me, "Who started Occupy Wall Street?" sometimes I say "Goldman Sachs" or "Chase" but mostly I just say, "Bradley Manning." It was his courageous action that was the tipping point -- and it was not surprising when the dictator of Tunisia censored all news of the Wikileaks documents Manning had allegedly supplied. But the internet took Manning's gift and spread it throughout Tunisia, a young man set himself on fire and the Arab Spring that led eventually to Zuccotti Park has a young, gay soldier in the United States Army to thank.
And that is why I want to honor Bradley Manning on this, his 24th birthday, and ask the millions of you reading this to join with me in demanding his immediate release. He does not deserve the un-American treatment, including cruel solitary confinement, he's received in over eighteen months of imprisonment. If anything, this young man deserves a friggin' medal. He did what great Americans have always done -- he took a bold stand against injustice and he did it without stopping for a minute to consider the consequences for himself.
The Pentagon and the national security apparatus are hell-bent on setting an example with Bradley Manning. But we as Americans have a right to know what is being done in our name and with our tax dollars. If the government tries to cover up its malfeasance, then it is the duty of each and every one of us, should the situation arise, to drag the truth, kicking and screaming if necessary, into the light of day.
The American flag was lowered in Iraq this past Thursday as our war on them officially came to an end. If anyone should be on trial or in the brig right now, it should be those men who lied to the nation in order to start this war -- and in doing so sent nearly 4,500 Americans and hundreds of thousands of Iraqis to their deaths.
But it is not Bush or Rumsfeld or Cheney or Wolfowitz who sit in prison tonight. It is the hero who exposed them. It is Bradley Manning who has lost his freedom and that, in turn, becomes just one more crime being committed in our name.
I know, I know, c'mon Mike -- it's the holiday season, there's presents to buy and parties to go to! And yes, this really is one of my favorite weeks of the year. But in the spirit of the man whose birth will be celebrated next Sunday, please do something, anything, to help this young man who spends his birthday tonight behind bars. I say, enough. Let him go home and spend Christmas with his family. We've done enough violence to the world this decade while claiming to be a country that admires the Prince of Peace. The war is over. And a whole new movement has a lot to thank Bradley Manning for.

I tragici accadimenti nella capitale toscana sono un fatto barbarico ma non c´è da stupirsi, “usciamo da quasi un´era di barbarie spettacolarizzata dal potere stesso, e questi sono i risultati”, dice la De Monticelli, in un'intervista alla Repubblica di Firenze. E in solidarietà con la comunità senegalese, duramente colpita dall'atto omicida e xenofono, anche LeG parteciperà a Firenze sabato 17 dicembre al corteo contro il razzismo con partenza alle 15 da piazza Dalmazia e arrivo in piazza Santa Maria Novella.

COSTRUIRE UN’ECONOMIA SALVA VITE, SALVA NAZIONE, SALVA DEMOCRAZIA.
Gli economisti della Modern Money Theory in Italia per formare il primo gruppo di attivisti della MMT contro lo scempio del Colpo di Stato Finanziario.
Sono Paolo Barnard. Ho deciso che è assolutamente vitale chiamare in Italia il gruppo fondatore della Modern Money Theory (MMT) per un summit di due giorni dedicato a chiunque sia intenzionato a divulgare la MMT come politica economica nazionale salva vite, salva nazione e salva democrazia.
Il perché: La MMT è oggi probabilmente l’unico strumento esistente di scienza economica e sociale che è in grado di sventare il colpo di Stato finanziario Neoclassico, Neomercantile e Neoliberista che, particolarmente nell’Europa dell’Eurozona, ha posto fine di fatto alla democrazia. E’ in gioco il destino reale di milioni di famiglie, di centinaia di migliaia di aziende, e dell’Italia stessa nella sua esistenza democratica. L’urgenza è massima, l’Eurozona è al collasso, pochi immaginano oggi le tragiche conseguenze decennali di questo disastro criminoso.
A chi è dedicata l’iniziativa: La MMT sta fiorendo su blog, siti, pubblicazioni come mai prima, in parte per opera del mio lavoro e in parte col contributo di altri attivisti. La MMT è osteggiata come nemico letale dalle elite politico-economiche dominanti, per i motivi da me spiegati ne Il Più Grande Crimine. Esse tenteranno ogni strada per soffocare la MMT in Italia e nel mondo. Se gli attivisti e i bloggers diffonderanno la MMT in modo approssimativo e non fedele alla sua scientificità, le elite avranno un’arma micidiale per screditarci, e sarà la fine. Motivo per cui io, e il gruppo di economisti americani leader della MMT, abbiamo deciso di indire un summit nazionale di due giornate dove tutti gli attivisti, bloggers, e cittadini intenzionati a promuovere la MMT potranno recarsi per ottenere dalla fonte più autorevole al mondo una infarinatura essenziale e completa su: MMT – Perché e come siamo caduti vittime del Colpo di Stato Finanziario – Crisi dell’Euro e soluzioni per l’Italia – Crisi Finanziaria, chi sono i criminali e come prevenirle – Costruire uno Stato sovrano che tuteli i cittadini con piena occupazione e pieno Stato Sociale, piena ricchezza produttiva e accesso alla democrazia vera. Essere competenti è vitale. Un volantino ufficiale sarà postato su questa pagina appena possibile.
I docenti: Saranno i Professori L. Randall Wray, Stephanie Kelton, Warren Mosler, Marshall Auerback e (da confermare) William Black, i cui CV accademici sono pubblicati in calce. Paolo Barnard curerà la lezione sul colpo di Stato finanziario Neoclassico, Neomercantile e Neoliberista.
Il luogo e date: Un hotel con centro conferenze in zona Umbria-Toscana per essere raggiungibili da nord e sud Italia; alternativamente un campus universitario nella stessa area, da decidere. Date da decidere, ma il prima possibile (tutto sarà comunicato su questa pagina).
Come funziona: I docenti non chiedono parcelle, ma solo rimborsi spese. Tuttavia le spese sono molto elevate (hotel, sala, traduttori simultanei professionisti d’economia, voli, trasporti ecc.). Chi desidera partecipare dovrà pagare una quota. La quota per le due giornate sarà di 40 euro (escl. vitto e alloggio dei partecipanti, che si auto organizzeranno). Calcolerò il budget complessivo dell’evento (che vi verrà reso noto) e lo dividerò per 40. Il numero risultante sarà il numero minimo richiesto di adesioni per lanciare l’organizzazione. Si aderisce scrivendo una mail a paolo.barnard@yahoo.it, con questa intestazione tassativa: summit nazionale MMT in Italia. Ogni altra mail sarà ignorata. La mail dovrà contenere SOLO il nome e cognome del partecipante con data di nascita e null’altro, no mail con nomi multipli (1 mail 1 nome), no nicknames, no lettere o richieste di spiegazioni. Al raggiungimento del numero minimo necessario, pubblicherò la lista piena dei nomi su questa pagina del mio sito. Se le adesioni saranno ampiamente in eccesso della capacità di ospitare i partecipanti, valuteremo se chiudere le iscrizioni o indire un secondo evento.
Gli aderenti dovranno poi versare l’importo per intero su un c/c da definire e che sarà comunicato qui in futuro. Al completamento dei versamenti necessari a coprire le spese vive, l’organizzazione diverrà concreta. Se non sarà raggiunto il numero sufficiente, il denaro verrà donato sotto diretta supervisione del Prof. L. Randall Wray (e rilascio di documentazione relativa) a studenti bisognosi che fanno ricerca su MMT all’Università del Missouri Kansas City (UMKC) e che rischiano l’abbandono degli studi per ristrettezze economiche*. Idem per ogni cifra raccolta in eccesso del necessario. La verifica della correttezza di tali eventualità è di facile attuazione, dato che il numero di aderenti è pubblico e il calcolo della cifra donata è ovvio a fronte del budget originario da me pubblicato.
Ulteriori partecipanti: E’ lasciata libera iniziativa agli aderenti di divulgare l’evento a partiti, gruppi, singoli, media, amministratori pubblici ecc. Tutti costoro, tuttavia, saranno tenuti a iscriversi con relativa quota di partecipazione. Ma attenzione: SI SPECIFICA CHE L’EVENTO E’ ESCLUSIVAMENTE PER APPRENDERE LA MMT, E NON PER DIBATTERE DI ALTERNATIVE POLITICHE O ECONOMICHE AD ESSO. NON SARA’ PERMESSO IL DIBATTITO AD ALCUNO SE NON SULL’APRENDIMENTO DELLA MMT. QUESTO NON SARA’ UN DIBATTITO PUBBLICO, MA UN SUMMIT SU UN TEMA SPECIFICO, LA MMT.
Questo perché le poche ore disponibili nelle due giornate saranno interamente prese dalle lezioni dei docenti e dalle domande pertinenti alla MMT degli iscritti.Abbiamo poco tempo e pochi mezzi, purtroppo.

Calcolerò il budget complessivo dell’evento (che vi verrà reso noto) e lo dividerò per 40. Il numero risultante sarà il numero minimo richiesto di adesioni per lanciare l’organizzazione. Si aderisce scrivendo una mail a paolo.barnard@yahoo.it, con questa intestazione tassativa: summit nazionale MMT in Italia. Ogni altra mail sarà ignorata. La mail dovrà contenere SOLO il nome e cognome del partecipante con data di nascita e null’altro, no mail con nomi multipli (1 mail 1 nome), no nicknames, no lettere o richieste di spiegazioni. Al raggiungimento del numero minimo necessario, pubblicherò la lista piena dei nomi su questa pagina del mio sito. Se le adesioni saranno ampiamente in eccesso della capacità di ospitare i partecipanti, valuteremo se chiudere le iscrizioni o indire un secondo evento.
Gli aderenti dovranno poi versare l’importo per intero su un c/c da definire e che sarà comunicato qui in futuro. Al completamento dei versamenti necessari a coprire le spese vive, l’organizzazione diverrà concreta. Se non sarà raggiunto il numero sufficiente, il denaro verrà donato sotto diretta supervisione del Prof. L. Randall Wray (e rilascio di documentazione relativa) a studenti bisognosi che fanno ricerca su MMT all’Università del Missouri Kansas City (UMKC) e che rischiano l’abbandono degli studi per ristrettezze economiche*. Idem per ogni cifra raccolta in eccesso del necessario. La verifica della correttezza di tali eventualità è di facile attuazione, dato che il numero di aderenti è pubblico e il calcolo della cifra donata è ovvio a fronte del budget originario da me pubblicato.
Ulteriori partecipanti: E’ lasciata libera iniziativa agli aderenti di divulgare l’evento a partiti, gruppi, singoli, media, amministratori pubblici ecc. Tutti costoro, tuttavia, saranno tenuti a iscriversi con relativa quota di partecipazione. Ma attenzione: SI SPECIFICA CHE L’EVENTO E’ ESCLUSIVAMENTE PER APPRENDERE LA MMT, E NON PER DIBATTERE DI ALTERNATIVE POLITICHE O ECONOMICHE AD ESSO. NON SARA’ PERMESSO IL DIBATTITO AD ALCUNO SE NON SULL’APRENDIMENTO DELLA MMT. QUESTO NON SARA’ UN DIBATTITO PUBBLICO, MA UN SUMMIT SU UN TEMA SPECIFICO, LA MMT.
Questo perché le poche ore disponibili nelle due giornate saranno interamente prese dalle lezioni dei docenti e dalle domande pertinenti alla MMT degli iscritti.Abbiamo poco tempo e pochi mezzi, purtroppo.

L. Randall Wray is a Professor of Economics at the University of Missouri-Kansas City and Senior Scholar at the Levy Economics Institute of Bard College, NY. A student of Hyman P. Minsky, Wray has focused on monetary theory and policy, macroeconomics, financial instability, and employment policy. He has published widely in journals and is the author of Understanding Modern Money: The Key to Full Employment and Price Stability (Elgar, 1998) and Money and Credit in Capitalist Economies (Elgar 1990). Wray received a B.A. from the University of the Pacific and an M.A. and Ph.D. from Washington University in St. Louis. He has served as a visiting professor at the Universities of Rome and Bologna in Italy, the University of Paris, and UAM and UNAM in Mexico City.
Stephanie Kelton, Ph.D. is Associate Professor of Economics at the University of Missouri-Kansas City, Research Scholar at The Levy Economics Institute and Director of Graduate Student Research at the Center for Full Employment and Price Stability. She is creator and editor of New Economic Perspectives. Marshall Auerback has over 28 years of experience in investment management. William Black, J.D., Ph.D. is Associate Professor of Law and Economics at the University of Missouri-Kansas City. Bill Black has testified before the Senate Agricultural Committee on the regulation of financial derivatives and House Governance Committee on the regulation of executive compensation. La mia poesia è alacre come il fuoco
trascorre tra le mie dita come un rosario
Non prego perché sono un poeta della sventura
che tace, a volte, le doglie di un parto dentro le ore,
sono il poeta che grida e che gioca con le sue grida,
sono il poeta che canta e non trova parole,
sono la paglia arida sopra cui batte il suono,
sono la ninnanànna che fa piangere i figli,
sono la vanagloria che si lascia cadere,
il manto di metallo di una lunga preghiera
del passato cordoglio che non vede la luce.
