E' morto nella sua casa di Milano, dopo una breve malattia, Giorgio Bocca. Il grande giornalista e scrittore era nato a Cuneo il 28 agosto del 1920.
Firma storica de La Repubblica, di cui è stato uno dei fondatori, Bocca nei suoi scritti si interessò dell'epopea partigiana, di terrorismo e questioni sociali. Ha raccontato nei suoi articoli e nei suoi libri l'ultimo mezzo secolo di vita italiana.
Bocca iniziò a scrivere già a metà degli anni ’30, su periodici locali e poi sul settimanale cuneese La Provincia Grande. Durante la guerra si arruolò come allievo ufficiale alpino e dopo l’armistizio fu tra i fondatori delle formazioni partigiane di Giustizia e Libertà. Riprese allora l’attività giornalistica, scrivendo per il giornale di GL, poi lavorando per la Gazzetta del Popolo, per l’Europeo e per Il Giorno e segnalandosi per le grandi inchieste. Nel 1976 fu tra i fondatori del quotidiano la Repubblica, con cui ha sempre continuato a collaborare.
I LIBRI - Al suo attivo anche numerosi libri, che spaziano dall'attualità politica e dall'analisi socioeconomica all'approfondimento storico e storiografico, senza mai dimenticare la sua esperienza partigiana. Tra le sue opere: Storia dell'Italia partigiana (1966); Storia dell'Italia nella guerra fascista (1969); Palmiro Togliatti (1973); La Repubblica di Mussolini (1977); Il terrorismo italiano 1970-78 (1978); Piccolo Cesare (2002, dedicato al fenomeno Berlusconi, libro che segnò il passaggio di Bocca da Mondadori, suo editore da oltre dieci anni, a Feltrinelli); Le mie montagne (2006); È la stampa, bellezza (2008); Annus Horribilis, Milano, Feltrinelli (2010); Fratelli Coltelli (1948-2010 L'Italia che ho Conosciuto), Milano, Feltrinelli (2010). ...e così è passato anche il giorno di Natale, in compagnia di mia madre, dalle 10.00 alla 21.00 circa- un piccolo esempio di come sarebbe la mia vita se si decidesse di affidarla a me...annullamento totale della mia volontà e servizio a tempo pieno...
siccome nella vita non si può escludere a priori qualsivoglia svolta, sarà bene che io tenga presente anche questa possibilità e mi ci prepari spiritualmente...per intanto rompo un po' l'incanto della festa con questo pezzo "luciferino"...ah-ah-ah-!

...anniversario...
...è di nuovo Natale e mai come quest'anno la festa mi lascia indifferente e triste per i miei tanti problemi ancora irrisolti: il lavoro, di cui sono stato all'ultimo momento defraudato, la salute di mia madre, sempre più precaria, che necessita di una soluzione efficace e definitiva, la ricerca di una compagna, che temo avrà esito negativo...insomma, c'è da chiedersi se valga la pena vivere una vita cosi disgraziata e priva di prospettive...
inizia un nuovo anno di blog, mi faccio forza e spero, spero ancora in un futuro positivo...ma la mia riserva di pazienza si sta esaurendo...

MMT
Aderisco, anche se con un po' di ritardo, all'appello lanciato dal giornalista Paolo Barnard, in favore di un Vostro intervento in Italia per l'organizzazione di un seminario che illustri e chiarisca struttura e scopi del MMT (Modern Money Theory)- inutile dire che, per superare l'attuale crisi e farne un'occasione di ripresa, occorre stravolgere e riconsiderare tutti gli attuali parametri su cui è fondata la gestione degli stati e delle organizzazioni internazionali.

La strada maestra
Cari amici,
un altro Natale insieme, il decimo da quando è nata Libertà e Giustizia.
Un Natale molto diverso dagli ultimi che ci stanno alle spalle. Sappiamo confusamente che niente sarà più come prima: meno certezze, meno serenità, tanti timori per i figli e i nipoti.
Un mondo difficile da capire e interpretare, senza riferimenti storici incoraggianti.
Un mondo sospeso.
Pensiamo che ci sarà di conforto sentirci parte attiva di una comunità, Libertà e Giustizia che in questi anni, con il sostegno concreto di tanti amici e soci, con l’incoraggiamento di molti che ci hanno aiutato a tenere fermo il timone, abbiamo costruito: questo è ormai per tanti cittadini Libertà e Giustizia, questo sono i circoli: una comunità di cultura politica. Non siamo dunque soli e nel dialogo e nel confronto delle idee ci aiuteremo a capire e a giudicare.
Ci aiuteremo, oltre i giorni della transizione da Berlusconi a Monti, a combattere il razzismo, la corruzione, il potere autoreferenziale della politica, della finanza, dell’economa. Ci aiuteremo a rivendicare i valori della Costituzione italiana.
Il nostro augurio è che la nostra ambizione sia la strada maestra.
Quella dei “Demoni” di Dostoevskij: “La strada maestra è qualcosa di lungo lungo, di cui non si vede la fine, come la vita umana, come il sogno umano. Nella strada maestra si cela un’idea…”

...la prima neve...
...oggi ha fatto la sua comparsa la prima neve, dapprima frammista a pioggia, poi sempre più conforme al suo naturale status...verso sera mi sono affacciato al balcone della camera da letto e davanti ai miei occhi si è dispiegata l'immagine classica del presepe: in primo piano l'alone bianco di due lampioni della casa vicina, poi la curva della strada con le sue zone arancioni, più in là la casaforte, con la merlatura illuminata, mentre una parte del prato in lontananza offriva la visione di un'oasi di vivido giallo, immersa in una fredda oscurità...in alto il castello appariva come una macchia nera, incombente su un gioco di luci in movimento...

It's Saturday night and I didn't want the day to end before I sent out this note to you.
One year ago today (December 17th), Mohamed Bouazizi, a man who had a simple produce stand in Tunisia, set himself on fire to protest his government's repression. His singular sacrifice ignited a revolution that toppled Tunisia's dictator and launched revolts in regimes across the Middle East.
Three months ago today, Occupy Wall Street began with a takeover of New York's Zuccotti Park. This movement against the greed of corporate America and its banks -- and the money that now controls most of our democratic institutions -- has quickly spread to hundreds of towns and cities across America. The majority of Americans now agree that a nation where 400 billionaires have more wealth than 160 million Americans combined is not the country they want America to be. The 99% are rising up against the 1% -- and now there is no turning back.
Twenty-four years ago today, U.S. Army Spc. Bradley Manning was born. He has now spent 570 days in a military prison without a trial -- simply because he allegedly blew the whistle on the illegal and immoral war in Iraq. He exposed what the Pentagon and the Bush administration did in creating this evil and he did so by allegedly leaking documents and footage to Wikileaks. Many of these documents dealt not only with Iraq but with how we prop up dictators around the world and how our corporations exploit the poor on this planet. (There were even cables with crazy stuff on them, like one detailing Bush's State Department trying to stop a government minister in another country from holding a screening of 'Fahrenheit 9/11.')
The Wikileaks trove was a fascinating look into how the United States conducts its business -- and clearly those who don't want the world to know how we do things in places like, say, Tunisia, were not happy with Bradley Manning.
Mohamed Bouazizi was being treated poorly by government officials because all he wanted to do was set up a cart and sell fruit and vegetables on the street. But local police kept harassing him and trying to stop him. He, like most Tunisians, knew how corrupt their government was. But when Wikileaks published cables from the U.S. ambassador in Tunis confirming the corruption -- cables that were published just a week or so before Mohamed set himself on fire -- well, that was it for the Tunisian people, and all hell broke loose.
People across the world devoured the information Bradley Manning revealed, and it was used by movements in Egypt, Spain, and eventually Occupy Wall Street to bolster what we already thought was true. Except here were the goods -- the evidence that was needed to prove it all true. And then a democracy movement spread around the globe so fast and so deep -- and in just a year's time! When anyone asks me, "Who started Occupy Wall Street?" sometimes I say "Goldman Sachs" or "Chase" but mostly I just say, "Bradley Manning." It was his courageous action that was the tipping point -- and it was not surprising when the dictator of Tunisia censored all news of the Wikileaks documents Manning had allegedly supplied. But the internet took Manning's gift and spread it throughout Tunisia, a young man set himself on fire and the Arab Spring that led eventually to Zuccotti Park has a young, gay soldier in the United States Army to thank.
And that is why I want to honor Bradley Manning on this, his 24th birthday, and ask the millions of you reading this to join with me in demanding his immediate release. He does not deserve the un-American treatment, including cruel solitary confinement, he's received in over eighteen months of imprisonment. If anything, this young man deserves a friggin' medal. He did what great Americans have always done -- he took a bold stand against injustice and he did it without stopping for a minute to consider the consequences for himself.
The Pentagon and the national security apparatus are hell-bent on setting an example with Bradley Manning. But we as Americans have a right to know what is being done in our name and with our tax dollars. If the government tries to cover up its malfeasance, then it is the duty of each and every one of us, should the situation arise, to drag the truth, kicking and screaming if necessary, into the light of day.
The American flag was lowered in Iraq this past Thursday as our war on them officially came to an end. If anyone should be on trial or in the brig right now, it should be those men who lied to the nation in order to start this war -- and in doing so sent nearly 4,500 Americans and hundreds of thousands of Iraqis to their deaths.
But it is not Bush or Rumsfeld or Cheney or Wolfowitz who sit in prison tonight. It is the hero who exposed them. It is Bradley Manning who has lost his freedom and that, in turn, becomes just one more crime being committed in our name.
I know, I know, c'mon Mike -- it's the holiday season, there's presents to buy and parties to go to! And yes, this really is one of my favorite weeks of the year. But in the spirit of the man whose birth will be celebrated next Sunday, please do something, anything, to help this young man who spends his birthday tonight behind bars. I say, enough. Let him go home and spend Christmas with his family. We've done enough violence to the world this decade while claiming to be a country that admires the Prince of Peace. The war is over. And a whole new movement has a lot to thank Bradley Manning for.

I tragici accadimenti nella capitale toscana sono un fatto barbarico ma non c´è da stupirsi, “usciamo da quasi un´era di barbarie spettacolarizzata dal potere stesso, e questi sono i risultati”, dice la De Monticelli, in un'intervista alla Repubblica di Firenze. E in solidarietà con la comunità senegalese, duramente colpita dall'atto omicida e xenofono, anche LeG parteciperà a Firenze sabato 17 dicembre al corteo contro il razzismo con partenza alle 15 da piazza Dalmazia e arrivo in piazza Santa Maria Novella.

COSTRUIRE UN’ECONOMIA SALVA VITE, SALVA NAZIONE, SALVA DEMOCRAZIA.
Gli economisti della Modern Money Theory in Italia per formare il primo gruppo di attivisti della MMT contro lo scempio del Colpo di Stato Finanziario.
Sono Paolo Barnard. Ho deciso che è assolutamente vitale chiamare in Italia il gruppo fondatore della Modern Money Theory (MMT) per un summit di due giorni dedicato a chiunque sia intenzionato a divulgare la MMT come politica economica nazionale salva vite, salva nazione e salva democrazia.
Il perché: La MMT è oggi probabilmente l’unico strumento esistente di scienza economica e sociale che è in grado di sventare il colpo di Stato finanziario Neoclassico, Neomercantile e Neoliberista che, particolarmente nell’Europa dell’Eurozona, ha posto fine di fatto alla democrazia. E’ in gioco il destino reale di milioni di famiglie, di centinaia di migliaia di aziende, e dell’Italia stessa nella sua esistenza democratica. L’urgenza è massima, l’Eurozona è al collasso, pochi immaginano oggi le tragiche conseguenze decennali di questo disastro criminoso.
A chi è dedicata l’iniziativa: La MMT sta fiorendo su blog, siti, pubblicazioni come mai prima, in parte per opera del mio lavoro e in parte col contributo di altri attivisti. La MMT è osteggiata come nemico letale dalle elite politico-economiche dominanti, per i motivi da me spiegati ne Il Più Grande Crimine. Esse tenteranno ogni strada per soffocare la MMT in Italia e nel mondo. Se gli attivisti e i bloggers diffonderanno la MMT in modo approssimativo e non fedele alla sua scientificità, le elite avranno un’arma micidiale per screditarci, e sarà la fine. Motivo per cui io, e il gruppo di economisti americani leader della MMT, abbiamo deciso di indire un summit nazionale di due giornate dove tutti gli attivisti, bloggers, e cittadini intenzionati a promuovere la MMT potranno recarsi per ottenere dalla fonte più autorevole al mondo una infarinatura essenziale e completa su: MMT – Perché e come siamo caduti vittime del Colpo di Stato Finanziario – Crisi dell’Euro e soluzioni per l’Italia – Crisi Finanziaria, chi sono i criminali e come prevenirle – Costruire uno Stato sovrano che tuteli i cittadini con piena occupazione e pieno Stato Sociale, piena ricchezza produttiva e accesso alla democrazia vera. Essere competenti è vitale. Un volantino ufficiale sarà postato su questa pagina appena possibile.
I docenti: Saranno i Professori L. Randall Wray, Stephanie Kelton, Warren Mosler, Marshall Auerback e (da confermare) William Black, i cui CV accademici sono pubblicati in calce. Paolo Barnard curerà la lezione sul colpo di Stato finanziario Neoclassico, Neomercantile e Neoliberista.
Il luogo e date: Un hotel con centro conferenze in zona Umbria-Toscana per essere raggiungibili da nord e sud Italia; alternativamente un campus universitario nella stessa area, da decidere. Date da decidere, ma il prima possibile (tutto sarà comunicato su questa pagina).
Come funziona: I docenti non chiedono parcelle, ma solo rimborsi spese. Tuttavia le spese sono molto elevate (hotel, sala, traduttori simultanei professionisti d’economia, voli, trasporti ecc.). Chi desidera partecipare dovrà pagare una quota. La quota per le due giornate sarà di 40 euro (escl. vitto e alloggio dei partecipanti, che si auto organizzeranno). Calcolerò il budget complessivo dell’evento (che vi verrà reso noto) e lo dividerò per 40. Il numero risultante sarà il numero minimo richiesto di adesioni per lanciare l’organizzazione. Si aderisce scrivendo una mail a paolo.barnard@yahoo.it, con questa intestazione tassativa: summit nazionale MMT in Italia. Ogni altra mail sarà ignorata. La mail dovrà contenere SOLO il nome e cognome del partecipante con data di nascita e null’altro, no mail con nomi multipli (1 mail 1 nome), no nicknames, no lettere o richieste di spiegazioni. Al raggiungimento del numero minimo necessario, pubblicherò la lista piena dei nomi su questa pagina del mio sito. Se le adesioni saranno ampiamente in eccesso della capacità di ospitare i partecipanti, valuteremo se chiudere le iscrizioni o indire un secondo evento.
Gli aderenti dovranno poi versare l’importo per intero su un c/c da definire e che sarà comunicato qui in futuro. Al completamento dei versamenti necessari a coprire le spese vive, l’organizzazione diverrà concreta. Se non sarà raggiunto il numero sufficiente, il denaro verrà donato sotto diretta supervisione del Prof. L. Randall Wray (e rilascio di documentazione relativa) a studenti bisognosi che fanno ricerca su MMT all’Università del Missouri Kansas City (UMKC) e che rischiano l’abbandono degli studi per ristrettezze economiche*. Sono Paolo Barnard. Ho deciso che è assolutamente vitale chiamare in Italia il gruppo fondatore della Modern Money Theory (MMT) per un summit di due giorni dedicato a chiunque sia intenzionato a divulgare la MMT come politica economica nazionale salva vite, salva nazione e salva democrazia.
Il perché: La MMT è oggi probabilmente l’unico strumento esistente di scienza economica e sociale che è in grado di sventare il colpo di Stato finanziario Neoclassico, Neomercantile e Neoliberista che, particolarmente nell’Europa dell’Eurozona, ha posto fine di fatto alla democrazia. E’ in gioco il destino reale di milioni di famiglie, di centinaia di migliaia di aziende, e dell’Italia stessa nella sua esistenza democratica. L’urgenza è massima, l’Eurozona è al collasso, pochi immaginano oggi le tragiche conseguenze decennali di questo disastro criminoso.
A chi è dedicata l’iniziativa: La MMT sta fiorendo su blog, siti, pubblicazioni come mai prima, in parte per opera del mio lavoro e in parte col contributo di altri attivisti. La MMT è osteggiata come nemico letale dalle elite politico-economiche dominanti, per i motivi da me spiegati ne Il Più Grande Crimine. The Winter of Our Occupation ...a proposal from Michael Moore

Friends,
And now it is winter. Wall Street rejoices, hoping that the change of seasons will mean a change in our spirit, our commitment to stop them.
They couldn't be more wrong. Have they not heard of Washington and the troops at Valley Forge? The Great Flint Sit-Down Strike in the winter of 1936-37? The Michigan Wolverines crushing Ohio State in the 1950 Blizzard Bowl? When it comes to winter, it is the time historically when the people persevere and the forces of evil make their retreat!
We are not even 12 weeks old, yet Occupy Wall Street has grown so fast, so big, none of us can keep up with the hundreds of towns who have joined the movement, or the thousands of actions -- some of them just simple ones in neighborhoods, schools and organizations -- that have happened. The national conversation has been irreversibly changed. Now everyone is talking about how the 1% are getting away with all the money while the 99% struggle to make ends meet. People are no longer paralyzed by despair or apathy. Most know that now is the time to reclaim our country from the bankers, the lobbyists -- and their gofers: the members of the United States Congress and the 50 state legislatures.
And they're crazy if they think that a little climate chaos (otherwise known as winter in the 21st century) that they've helped to bring about is going to stop us.
I would like to propose to my Occupying sisters and brothers that there are many ways to keep Occupy Wall Street going through the winter months. There is perhaps no better time to move the movement indoors for a few months -- and watch it grow even bigger! (For those who have the stamina to maintain the outdoor occupations, by all means, keep it up -- and the rest of us will do our best to help you and keep you warm!)
The winter gives us an amazing opportunity to expand our actions against the captains of capitalism who have occupied our homes with their fraudulent mortgage system which has tossed millions of families out onto the curb; a cruel health care system that has told 50 million Americans "if you can't afford a doctor, go F yourself"; a student loan system that sends 22-year-olds into an immediate "debtors' prison" of working lousy jobs for which they didn't go to school but now have to take because they're in hock for tens of thousands of dollars for the next two decades; and a jobs market that keeps 25 million Americans un- or under-employed -- and much of the rest of the workers forced to accept wage cuts, health care reductions and zero job security.
But we in the Occupy Movement reject this version of the "American Dream." Instead, I suggest we shift our focus for this winter to the following actions:
OCCUPY THE WINTER
A proposal to the General Assembly of Occupy Wall Street from Michael Moore
1. Occupy Our Homes. Sorry, banks, a roof over one's head is a human right, and you will no longer occupy our homes through foreclosure and eviction because well, you see, they are our homes, not yours. You may hold the mortgage; you don't hold the right to throw us or our neighbors out into the cold. With almost one in three home mortgages currently in foreclosure, nearing foreclosure or "underwater," the Occupy Movement must form local "Occupy Strike Forces" to create human shields when the banks come to throw people out of their homes. If the foreclosure has already happened, then we must help families move back into their foreclosed homes -- literally (see this clip from my last film to watch how a home re-occupation is accomplished). Beginning today, Take Back the Land, plus many other citizens' organizations nationwide, are kicking off Occupy Our Homes. Numerous actions throughout the day today have already resulted in many families physically taking back their homes. This will continue every day until the banks are forced to stop their fraudulent practices, until homeowners are allowed to change their mortgage so that it reflects the true value of their homes, and until those who can no longer afford a mortgage are allowed to stay in their homes and pay rent. I beseech the news media to cover these actions -- they are happening everywhere. Evictions, though rarely covered (you need a Kardashian in your home as you're being evicted to qualify for news coverage) are not a new story (see this scene I filmed in 1988). Also, please remember the words of Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur of Toledo (in 'Capitalism: A Love Story'): Do not leave your homes if the bank forecloses on you! Let them take you to court and then YOU ask the judge to make them produce a copy of your mortgage. They can't. It was chopped up a hundred different ways, bundled with a hundred other mortgages, and sold off to the Chinese. If they can't produce the mortgage, they can't evict you.
2. Occupy Your College. In nearly every other democracy on the planet, students go to college for free or almost free. Why do those countries do that? Because they know that for their society to advance, they must have an educated population. Without that, productivity, innovation and an informed electorate is stunted and everyone suffers as a result. Here's how we do it in the U.S.A.: make education one of our lowest priorities, graduate students who know little about the world or their own government or the economy, and then force them into crushing debt before they even have their first job. That way has really worked well for us, hasn't it? It's made us the world leader in … in … well, ok, we're like 27th or 34th in everything now (except war). This has to end. Students should spend this winter doing what they are already doing on dozens of campuses -- holding sit-ins, occupying the student loan office, nonviolently disrupting the university regents meetings, and pitching their tents on the administration's lawn. Young people -- we, the '60s generation, promised to create a better world for you. We got halfway there -- now you have to complete the job. Do not stop until these wars are ended, the Pentagon budget is cut in half, and the rich are forced to pay their taxes. And demand that that money go to your education. We'll be there with you on all of this! And when we get this fixed and you graduate, instead of being $40,000 in debt, go see the friggin' world, or tinker around in your garage a la the two Steves, or start a band. Enjoy life, discover, explore, experiment, find your way. Anything but the assistant manager at Taco Bell.
3. Occupy Your Job. Let's spend the winter organizing workplaces into unions. OR, if you already have a union, demand that your leaders get off their ass and get aggressive like our grandparents did. For chrissakes, surely you know we would not have a middle class if it weren't for the strikes of the 1930s-1950s?! In three weeks we will celebrate the 75th anniversary of the workers in my hometown of Flint, Michigan taking over and occupying the General Motors factories for 44 days in the dead of winter. Their actions ignited a labor movement that lifted tens of millions out of poverty and into the middle class. It's time to do it again. (According to the Census Bureau and the New York Times, 100 million Americans either live in or near poverty. Disgraceful. Greed has destroyed the core fabric of our communities. Enough!) Here are two good unions to get your fellow workers to sign up and join: UE and SEIU. The CWA are also good. Here's how to get a quick primer in organizing your place of employment (don't forget to be careful while you do this!). If your company is threatening to close down and move the jobs elsewhere, then it's time to occupy the workplace (again, you can get a lesson in how to successfully occupy your factory from my movie).
4. Occupy Your Bank. This is an easy one. Just leave them. Move your checking and your credit card to a nonprofit credit union. It's safe and the decisions made there aren't based on greed. And if a bank tries to evict your neighbor, Occupy the local branch with 20 other people and call the press. Post it on the internet.
5. Occupy the Insurance Man. It's time to not only stand up for the 50 million without health insurance but to also issue a single, simple demand: The elimination of for-profit, privately-controlled health insurance companies. It is nothing short of barbaric to allow businesses to make a profit off people when they get sick. We don't allow anyone to make a profit when we need the fire department or the police. Until recently we would never allow a company to make a profit by operating in a public school. The same should be true for when you need to see a doctor or stay in the hospital. So I say it's long overdue for us to go and Occupy Humana, United Health, Cigna and even the supposed "nonprofit" Blue Crosses. An action on their lawns, in their lobbies, or at the for-profit hospitals -- this is what is needed.
So -- there are my ideas for the five places we can Occupy this winter. Help the foreclosed-upon to Occupy their homes. Occupy your college campus, especially the student loan office and the regents meetings. And Occupy the insurance company offices, the pharmaceutical companies' headquarters and the for-profit hospitals until the White House and Congress pass the true single-payer universal health care bill they failed to pass in 2010.
My friends, the rich are running scared right now. You need no further proof of this than to read this story from last week. The Republicans' top strategist met privately with them and told them that they had better change their tune or they were going to be crushed by the Occupy Wall Street movement. They didn't have to change their greedy actions, he assured them -- just the way they talk and PR the situation. He told them never to use the word "capitalism" -- it has now been made a dirty word by the Occupy movement, he said. Only say "economic freedom" from now on, he cautioned. And don't criticize the movement -- because the majority of Americans either agree with it or are feeling the same way. Just tell the Occupiers and the distressed Americans: "I get it." Seriously.
Yes, in just 12 short weeks we have killed their most sacred word -- Capitalism -- and we have them on the run, on the defensive. They should be. Millions are coming after them and our only goal is to remove them from power and replace them with a fair system that is controlled by the 99%. The 1% have been able to get both political parties to do their bidding. Why should only 1% of the population get to have two parties -- and the rest of us have none? That, too, is going to change. In my next letter, I will suggest what we can do to Occupy the Electoral Process. But first we must start with those who pull the strings of the puppets in the Congress. That's why it's called Occupy Wall Street. Always better to deal with man in charge, don't you think?

Friends,
And now it is winter. Wall Street rejoices, hoping that the change of seasons will mean a change in our spirit, our commitment to stop them.
They couldn't be more wrong. Have they not heard of Washington and the troops at Valley Forge? The Great Flint Sit-Down Strike in the winter of 1936-37? The Michigan Wolverines crushing Ohio State in the 1950 Blizzard Bowl? When it comes to winter, it is the time historically when the people persevere and the forces of evil make their retreat!
We are not even 12 weeks old, yet Occupy Wall Street has grown so fast, so big, none of us can keep up with the hundreds of towns who have joined the movement, or the thousands of actions -- some of them just simple ones in neighborhoods, schools and organizations -- that have happened. The national conversation has been irreversibly changed. Now everyone is talking about how the 1% are getting away with all the money while the 99% struggle to make ends meet. People are no longer paralyzed by despair or apathy. Most know that now is the time to reclaim our country from the bankers, the lobbyists -- and their gofers: the members of the United States Congress and the 50 state legislatures.
And they're crazy if they think that a little climate chaos (otherwise known as winter in the 21st century) that they've helped to bring about is going to stop us.
I would like to propose to my Occupying sisters and brothers that there are many ways to keep Occupy Wall Street going through the winter months. There is perhaps no better time to move the movement indoors for a few months -- and watch it grow even bigger! (For those who have the stamina to maintain the outdoor occupations, by all means, keep it up -- and the rest of us will do our best to help you and keep you warm!)
The winter gives us an amazing opportunity to expand our actions against the captains of capitalism who have occupied our homes with their fraudulent mortgage system which has tossed millions of families out onto the curb; a cruel health care system that has told 50 million Americans "if you can't afford a doctor, go F yourself"; a student loan system that sends 22-year-olds into an immediate "debtors' prison" of working lousy jobs for which they didn't go to school but now have to take because they're in hock for tens of thousands of dollars for the next two decades; and a jobs market that keeps 25 million Americans un- or under-employed -- and much of the rest of the workers forced to accept wage cuts, health care reductions and zero job security.
But we in the Occupy Movement reject this version of the "American Dream." Instead, I suggest we shift our focus for this winter to the following actions:
OCCUPY THE WINTER
A proposal to the General Assembly of Occupy Wall Street from Michael Moore
1. Occupy Our Homes. Sorry, banks, a roof over one's head is a human right, and you will no longer occupy our homes through foreclosure and eviction because well, you see, they are our homes, not yours. You may hold the mortgage; you don't hold the right to throw us or our neighbors out into the cold. With almost one in three home mortgages currently in foreclosure, nearing foreclosure or "underwater," the Occupy Movement must form local "Occupy Strike Forces" to create human shields when the banks come to throw people out of their homes. If the foreclosure has already happened, then we must help families move back into their foreclosed homes -- literally (see this clip from my last film to watch how a home re-occupation is accomplished). Beginning today, Take Back the Land, plus many other citizens' organizations nationwide, are kicking off Occupy Our Homes. Numerous actions throughout the day today have already resulted in many families physically taking back their homes. This will continue every day until the banks are forced to stop their fraudulent practices, until homeowners are allowed to change their mortgage so that it reflects the true value of their homes, and until those who can no longer afford a mortgage are allowed to stay in their homes and pay rent. I beseech the news media to cover these actions -- they are happening everywhere. Evictions, though rarely covered (you need a Kardashian in your home as you're being evicted to qualify for news coverage) are not a new story (see this scene I filmed in 1988). Also, please remember the words of Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur of Toledo (in 'Capitalism: A Love Story'): Do not leave your homes if the bank forecloses on you! Let them take you to court and then YOU ask the judge to make them produce a copy of your mortgage. They can't. It was chopped up a hundred different ways, bundled with a hundred other mortgages, and sold off to the Chinese. If they can't produce the mortgage, they can't evict you.
2. Occupy Your College. In nearly every other democracy on the planet, students go to college for free or almost free. Why do those countries do that? Because they know that for their society to advance, they must have an educated population. Without that, productivity, innovation and an informed electorate is stunted and everyone suffers as a result. Here's how we do it in the U.S.A.: make education one of our lowest priorities, graduate students who know little about the world or their own government or the economy, and then force them into crushing debt before they even have their first job. That way has really worked well for us, hasn't it? It's made us the world leader in … in … well, ok, we're like 27th or 34th in everything now (except war). This has to end. Students should spend this winter doing what they are already doing on dozens of campuses -- holding sit-ins, occupying the student loan office, nonviolently disrupting the university regents meetings, and pitching their tents on the administration's lawn. Young people -- we, the '60s generation, promised to create a better world for you. We got halfway there -- now you have to complete the job. Do not stop until these wars are ended, the Pentagon budget is cut in half, and the rich are forced to pay their taxes. And demand that that money go to your education. We'll be there with you on all of this! And when we get this fixed and you graduate, instead of being $40,000 in debt, go see the friggin' world, or tinker around in your garage a la the two Steves, or start a band. Enjoy life, discover, explore, experiment, find your way. Anything but the assistant manager at Taco Bell.
3. Occupy Your Job. Let's spend the winter organizing workplaces into unions. OR, if you already have a union, demand that your leaders get off their ass and get aggressive like our grandparents did. For chrissakes, surely you know we would not have a middle class if it weren't for the strikes of the 1930s-1950s?! In three weeks we will celebrate the 75th anniversary of the workers in my hometown of Flint, Michigan taking over and occupying the General Motors factories for 44 days in the dead of winter. Their actions ignited a labor movement that lifted tens of millions out of poverty and into the middle class. It's time to do it again. (According to the Census Bureau and the New York Times, 100 million Americans either live in or near poverty. Disgraceful. Greed has destroyed the core fabric of our communities. Enough!) Here are two good unions to get your fellow workers to sign up and join: UE and SEIU. The CWA are also good. Here's how to get a quick primer in organizing your place of employment (don't forget to be careful while you do this!). If your company is threatening to close down and move the jobs elsewhere, then it's time to occupy the workplace (again, you can get a lesson in how to successfully occupy your factory from my movie).
4. Occupy Your Bank. This is an easy one. Just leave them. Move your checking and your credit card to a nonprofit credit union. It's safe and the decisions made there aren't based on greed. And if a bank tries to evict your neighbor, Occupy the local branch with 20 other people and call the press. Post it on the internet.
5. Occupy the Insurance Man. It's time to not only stand up for the 50 million without health insurance but to also issue a single, simple demand: The elimination of for-profit, privately-controlled health insurance companies. It is nothing short of barbaric to allow businesses to make a profit off people when they get sick. We don't allow anyone to make a profit when we need the fire department or the police. Until recently we would never allow a company to make a profit by operating in a public school. The same should be true for when you need to see a doctor or stay in the hospital. So I say it's long overdue for us to go and Occupy Humana, United Health, Cigna and even the supposed "nonprofit" Blue Crosses. An action on their lawns, in their lobbies, or at the for-profit hospitals -- this is what is needed.
So -- there are my ideas for the five places we can Occupy this winter. Help the foreclosed-upon to Occupy their homes. Occupy your college campus, especially the student loan office and the regents meetings. La "manovra Monti" stringerà tutti noi nella morsa del debito, ma quel debito non ci appartiene. Quel debito è stato prodotto in gran parte proprio dalle Grandi Opere a cui ci opponiamo, è stato prodotto dal malaffare, dalle tangenti, dall'abbandono scientifico del territorio, dei beni comuni da parte dello Stato, che con la scusa dell'urgenza impone poi con la forza opere inutili ed inceneritori, che puzzano di spreco e corruzione, di politica marcia. Purtroppo il decreto Monti continua su questa strada.

Monti ed i suoi ministri sono figli del vecchio sistema, nessun taglio alle spese militari, nessun risparmio sui costi della politica. Poco o nulla a carico di chi ha i patrimoni, di quelli che hanno i capitali all'estero o li hanno fatti rientrare. A pagare i lavoratori, quelli che non possono evadere, quelli che si sono risparmiati quattro mura, gli imprenditori onesti. Niente tagli alle opere inutili.
Il TAV a cui ci opponiamo in questa 4 giorni è l’opera più inutile, insostenibile, devastante, complessa e costosa mai immaginata. Loro lo sanno! E proprio per questo la vogliono! E' l'affare del secolo per i corrotti, le banche, la politica... la Salerno Reggio Calabria del Nord! Non importa fare in fretta, l'importante è partire, appaltare, scavare nella montagna alla ricerca del loro tesoro...
A preventivo è stato certificato che costerebbe 1300 euro al centimetro, ma si sa già che se mai riuscissero a realizzarla il suo costo sarebbe almeno di 5000 euro al centimetro. QUESTO NON E' SVILUPPO, POICHE' LA LINEA ESISTENTE E' UTILIZZATA PER MENO DI 1/3 DELLA SUA CAPACITA'. IL RISCHIO URANIO ED AMIANTO E' TROPPO ALTO PER BUCARE QUELLE MONTAGNE, 50 GRADI CENTIGRADI DI CALORE NELLE ROCCE DA PERFORARE, MILIONI DI METRI CUBI DI ACQUA POTABILE DISPERSA, ma politicanti, banchieri, burocrati, mafiosi ed imprenditori scaltri non vedono l'ora di partire.

I contribuenti, che in questi giorni vengono tartassati, i lavoratori che dovranno aspettare 66 anni di età per lasciare il posto ai propri figli, i giovani studenti che non hanno speranze e che devono andarsene dall'Italia per cercare un lavoro sappiano che QUI IN VALLE DI SUSA CI SI OPPONE ALLO SPRECO ANCHE PER LORO: SPRECHI E GIUSTIZIA SOCIALE NON SONO COMPATIBILI. Il TAV in valle di Susa costerebbe come minimo 20 miliardi di euro, proprio quelli che tolgono alle pensioni, debiti addossati alle nuove generazioni, proprio quelle che non hanno futuro! FERMIAMOLI!
Circondiamo le loro inutili reti, facendo pressione intorno ai luoghi simbolo della connivenza tra (mal)affari e politica, con atti di disobbedienza civile che sono una garanzia per il futuro di tutto il paese. Protestiamo contro chi collabora attivamente alla militarizzazione, come la Sitaf che ha consentito l’apertura in autostrada di un corridoio per il passaggio dei militari e delle ruspe, diminuendo la sicurezza dell'arteria e aumentando contemporaneamente i pedaggi autostradali.

Firma anche tu l'appello per chiedere al Presidente del consiglio Mario Monti di non andare martedì a Porta a Porta da Bruno Vespa. Il testo è l'articolo di Corrado Stajano pubblicato sul Corriere della Sera di domenica 4 dicembre.
Sono rimasto deluso e amareggiato alla notizia che Mario Monti, dopo aver presentato la manovra in Parlamento, andrà da Vespa a «Porta a Porta». Tutto è simbolico. Credo che Monti vada sorretto in tutti i modi in questo momento così drammatico. L’ho scritto anche sul Corriere l’altro giorno. Ma questa notizia mi fa trasalire. Non si è tanto parlato di discontinuità in queste settimane? Vespa rappresenta la centrale del berlusconismo di questi decenni, il ponte con un passato da cancellare, l’immagine della continuità. Il presidente del Consiglio che si è addossato un impegno così gravoso e meritorio non deve andare in quello studio né prima dei suoi interventi in Parlamento (ci mancherebbe altro) né dopo. Sembra che lui e i suoi consiglieri conoscano poco la società italiana e l’opinione pubblica. «Tutto come prima», diranno i cittadini chiamati a fare sacrifici non per loro colpa. Mi stupiscono anche i leader della vecchia opposizione che sembra abbiano perduto il polso del pensare comune e non hanno fatto obiezioni a una notizia che non è certo politicamente trascurabile. Ci sono altri modi per mostrare che il clima è cambiato. Una dignitosa e autorevole conferenza stampa a palazzo Chigi con i giornalisti italiani e stranieri verrebbe trasmessa da tutte le reti televisive informando un numero più elevato di persone. «Porta a Porta» non è il popolo italiano.

Regione Lombardia, torniamo a votare
Non c’ è solo lo smog ad avvelenare Milano e tanta parte della Lombardia. C’è un’aria mefitica che soffoca la classe politica abbarbicata alla Regione, una sorta di Regno finora sopportato ma che volge al tramonto. Libertà e Giustizia si rivolge dunque al presidente Roberto Formigoni: non pensa che eticità e moralità, rispetto delle regole e volontà di trasparenza e aria pulita richiedano le dimissioni sue, della Giunta, del Consiglio per ridare la parola ai cittadini?

Con il governo Monti e il nuovo ministro, Paola Severino, di leggi ad personam o ad aziendam o comunque ad Berlusconem, non si parlerà più. Non c’ è solo lo smog ad avvelenare Milano e tanta parte della Lombardia. C’è un’aria mefitica che soffoca la classe politica abbarbicata alla Regione, una sorta di Regno finora sopportato ma che volge al tramonto. Libertà e Giustizia si rivolge dunque al presidente Roberto Formigoni: non pensa che eticità e moralità, rispetto delle regole e volontà di trasparenza e aria pulita richiedano le dimissioni sue, della Giunta, del Consiglio per ridare la parola ai cittadini?
